AreaderinFlorida,apparentlybruisedbysomepersonalexperience,writesintocomplain,“IfIstealanickel'sworthofmerchandise,Iamathiefandpunished;butifIstealtheloveofanother'swife,Iamfree.”

Thisisaprevalentmisconceptioninmanypeople'sminds---thatlove,likemerchandise,canbe“stolen ”。Numerousstates,infact,haveenactedlawsallowingdamagesfor“alienationofaffections
” 。

Butloveisnotacommodity;therealthingcannotbebought,sold,tradedorstolen.Itisanactofthewill,aturningoftheemotions,achangeintheclimateofthepersonality.

Whenahusbandorwifeis“stolen”byanotherperson,thathusbandorwifewasalreadyripeforthestealing,wasalreadypredisposedtowardanewpartner.The“lovebandit ”wasonlytakingwhatwaswaitingtobetaken,whatwantedtobetaken.

Wetendtotreatpersonslikegoods.Weevenspeakofthechildren“belonging
”totheirparents.Butnobody“belongs”toanyoneelse.Eachpersonbelongstohimself,andtoGod.Childrenareentrustedtotheirparents,andiftheirparentsdonottreatthemproperly,thestatehasarighttoremovethemfromtheirparents'trusteeship.

Mostofus,whenyoung,hadtheexperienceofasweetheartbeingtakenfromusbysomebodymoreattractiveandmoreappealing.Atthetime,wemayhaveresentedthisintruder---butaswegrewolder,werecognizedthatthesweethearthadneverbeenourstobeginwith.Itwasnottheintruderthat“caused ”thebreak,butthelackofarealrelationship.

Onthesurface,manymarriagesseemtobreakupbecauseofa“thirdparty
”.Thisis,however,apsychologicalillusion.Theotherwomanortheothermanmerelyservesasapretextfordissolvingoramarriagethathadalreadylostitsessentialintegrity.

Nothingismorefutileandmoreself-defeatingthanthebitternessofspurnedlove,thevengefulfeelingthatsomeoneelsehas“comebetween”oneselfandabeloved.Thisisalwaysadistortionofreality,forpeoplearenotthecaptivesorvictimsofothers---theyarefreeagents,workingouttheirowndestiniesforgoodorforill.

Buttherejectedloverormatecannotaffordtobelievethathisbelovedhasfreelyturnedawayfromhim---andsoheascribessinisterormagicalpropertiestotheinterloper.Hecallshimahypnotistorathieforahome-breaker.Inthevastmajorityofcases,however,whenahomeisbroken,thebreakinghasbegunlongbeforeany“thirdparty ”hasappearedonthescene.
