Thecoupleswhowereinwhatwasoncecalled"geographicallyimpossible"situationstendedtorevealmoreaboutthemselvesineachconversationandtoidealizetheirpartner'sresponsetoeachpieceofself-disclosure.Theyalsospentmoretimeoneachinteraction.Suchdisclosuresandidealizations,studiessuggest,arethebuildingblocksofintimacy.Sonotsurprisingthatthediariesreflectedmoresatisfactionamongtheremotelyplacedpartners."Thelong-distancecouplestryharderthangeographicallyclosecouplesincommunicatingaffectionandintimacy,"saysJiang,"andtheireffortsdopayback."
