Acenturyago,Progressive-erareformers,shockedbythenumberofteenstrappedindead-endjobs,launchedaremarkablecampaigntohelpeveryoneattendhighschool.Fornearly40years,thiscountryopenedanewhighschool,onaverage,everyday.Ahighschooldiplomaallowedthechildrenoffactoryworkersandfarmerstoobtainrelativelyhigh-skilled,high-wagejobs,narrowingthewagegapamongthesocialclassesandenhancingthegrowthofthenation’seconomy.Today,wefaceasimilarproblemattheuniversitylevel.Youngpeopleincreasinglyrealizethattheycannotearnalivingwagewithoutgoingtocollege.Yetmanyarewoefullyunpreparedtodoso,bothbecauseoftheinferioreducationInmostlow»incomecommunitiesandbecausetheirparentscannothelpthemthroughcollege.Sotheyworkextrahoursandtakeoncripplingdebtloads.Aboutathirdofthestudentsatpublicorprivatefour-yearuniversitiesandtwo-thirdsofthosewhoenrollinacommunitycollegeorafor-profitinstitutiondonotearnadegree,whileaccumulatingsubstantialredink.PassageTwo

“Sinceitsearlyappearanceinthe1960s,theterm‘globalization’hasbeenusedinbothpopularandacademicliteraturetodescribeaprocess,acondition,asystem,aforce,andanage.Giventhatthesecompetinglabelshaveverydifferentmeanings,theirindiscriminateusageisoftenobscureandinvitesconfusion.Forexample,asloppyconflationofprocessandconditionencouragescirculardefinitionsthatpossesslittleexplanatorypower.Forexample,theoften-repeatedtruismthat‘globalization[theprocess]leadstomoreglobalization[thecondition]’doesnotallowustodrawmeaningfulanalyticaldistinctionsbetweencausesandeffects.Hence,Isuggestthatweusethetermglobalitytosignifyasocialconditioncharacterizedbytheexistenceofglobaleconomic,political,cultural,andenvironmentalinterconnectionsandflowsthatmakemanyofthecurrentlyexistingbordersandboundariesirrelevant.Yet,weshouldnotassumethat‘globality’referstoadeterminateendpointthatprecludesanyfurtherdevelopment.Rather,thisconceptpointstoaparticularsocialconditionthat,likeallconditions,isdestinedtogivewaytonew,qualitativelydistinctconstellations.
