Therearemanythingsthatcanaffectthesefactorsthatmaketornadoesmorelikely.Scientistshavefoundthatclimatechangeissomethingthatcanaffecttornadoconditions.ButwhenNOAAlookedatdataforthepast30years’worthofAprilsintheMississippiValley,theydidn’tseeevidenceofanytrendsthatwouldmeantornadoweatherisalreadybecomingmorefrequent.

Becauseofthat,NOAAsaysitwouldbeproblematictoclaimtherecentspateoftornadoesintheSoutheastwerecausedbyclimatechange.Butthat’snotthesameassayingtornadoescan’tbecausedbyclimatechange.It’snotthesamethingassayingthatclimatechangeisn’tacontributingfactor.Orthattornadoeswon’tbecausedbyclimatechangeinthefuture.It’snoteventhesameassayingthat,yearsfromnow,withbetterdataandtechnology,wewon’tlookbackandseeatrendhappeningthatisn’tobvioustoday.NOAA’sassessmentisbasedonindirectevidencefocusedononeareaofonecountry.Thebigquestion–Aretornadoescausedbyclimatechange?–ismadeupoflotsoflittlequestions.Andwedon’tknowalltheanswerstothelittlequestionsyet.
