TheIndustrialRevolutionisalongtrainofchangesstartingabout1760.Itisnotalone:itformsoneofatriadofrevolutions,ofwhichtheothertwoweretheAmericanRevolutionthatstartedin1775,andtheFrenchRevolutionthatstartedin1789.Itmayseemstrangetoputintothesamepacketanindustrialrevolutionandtwopoliticalrevolutions.Butthefactisthattheywereallsocialrevolutions.TheIndustrialRevolutionissimplytheEnglishwayofmakingthosesocialchanges.IthinkofitastheEnglishRevolution.

WhatmakesitespeciallyEnglish?Obviously,itbeganinEngland.Englandwasalreadytheleadingmanufacturingnation.Butthemanufacturewascottageindustry,andtheIndustrialRevolutionbeginsinthevillages.Themenwhomakeitarecraftsmen:themillwright,thewatchmaker,thecanalbuilder,andtheblacksmith.WhatmakestheIndustrialRevolutionsopeculiarlyEnglishisthatitisrootedinthecountryside.

Duringthefirsthalfoftheeighteenthcentury,intheoldageofNewtonandthedeclineoftheRoyalSociety,EnglandbaskedinalastIndiansummerofvillageindustryandtheoverseastradeofmerchantadventurers.Thesummerfaded.Tradegrewmorecompetitive.Bytheendofthecenturytheneedsofindustrywereharsherandmorepressing.Theorganizationofworkinthecottagewasnolongerproductiveenough.Withintwogenerations,roughlybetween1760and1820,thecustomarywayofrunningindustrychanged.Before1760,itwasstandardtotakeworktovillagersintheirownhomes.By1820,itwasstandardtobringworkersintoafactoryandhavethemoverseen.
