Thesedeclinesareexpectedtocauseanumberofeffectsthatwilldampendomesticdemand,especiallypersonalconsumptionandcorporateinvestments.AlthoughequitymarketinvestmentsonlyconstituteasmallpercentageofoverallhouseholdwealthandequityfinancingconsistsofrelativelyasmallportionofcorporateinvestmentinAsia-Pacificascomparedwithdevelopedcountries,thedeclineswillaffectthemoreadvancedeconomiesoftheregion,suchastheRepublicofKorea,SingaporeandHongKongofChina.

Secondly,declinesinpropertymarketswillfurtherdampendomesticdemand.Thereductioninhousingpriceswillhaveaneffectonrealestateinvestments,whichhaveplayedaparticularlyimportantroleinthegrowthofdomesticdemandinanumberofcountries—mostnotablyinChina,wherethepropertysectoraccountsforaboutonequarterofallinvestment.

Privateconsumptionwillalsobeaffectedbythefallinpropertyprices,particularlyinthemoreadvancedeconomiesintheregion,wherepropertyassetsaccountforamoresignificantportionofhouseholdwealth.

Thirdly,reducedbanklendingisthemostsignificantfactorcurtailingcorporateactivityanddomesticdemand.

Theconcernhereisthatanincreaseinnon-performingloanswillresultingreaterrestraintsonandareductioninnewlending,leadingtopossiblehighercostsfornewborrowers.Increasedborrowingcostsmayinturnaddfurtherpressuresresultinginagreaternumberofcorporatedefaults.
