Researchexperience

1.Mitochondrialtargetingofnutrtionalinterventiononagerelatedmaculardegeneration(AMD).Degenerationofretinalpigmentepithelium(RPE)cellisconsideredmajorcausethatinducesAMD,whileoxidativestressinducedmitochondrialdysfunctioniscloselyrelatedRPEdegeneration.UsingARPE-19cellmodel,IhaveselectedseveralnutritientsthatpreventoxidativestressinducedRPEcelldeathbyactivatingmitochondrialbiogenesis,improvingmitochondrialfunctionandinducingphaseIIenzymes.

2.Mitochondrialdynamicregulationinobesity,diabeticdevelopmentandeffectsofnutrionalintervention.Mitochondrialdysfunctionisassociatedwithdevelopmentofobesityanddiabetes.I’minterestedinfindingouthowmitochondrialdynamicincludingmitochondrialbiogenesis,degradation,fusion,fissionaffectmitochondrialfunctionduringobesityanddiabeticprogression.Usingseveralcellandanimalmodels,Iintenttofindeffectivenutritientswhichcouldinhibitobesity,diabetes,andassociatedfattyliverdevelopmentbyregulatingmitochondrialfunction.

3.Involvementofmitochondrialdysfunctioninprenatalstressinducedoffspringcongivitivedeclineandeffectsofnutritionalintervention.Ithasbeenwellindicatedthatprenatalstresscouldinduceoffspringcognitivedecline.Mystudyshowedthatprenatalstressinducedmitochondrialdysfunctionandoxidativedamageinoffspringhippocampusmightbethemajorcause.Besidesthewell-knowroleinchildrenbraindevelopment,Ifoundnovelroleofdocosahexaenoicacid(22:6n-3;DHA)inprotectingprenatalstressinducedcognitivedysfuntioninvolvingthemodulationofmitochondrialfunctionsanddynamics.

4.Autophagyandmitochondrialremodelinginlong-termstrenuousexercise.Physicalexerciseisconsideredtoexertapositiveeffectonhealth.While,Ifoundstrenuousorexcessiveexercisecausesfatigueanddamagetomuscleandimmunefunctionstherebydecreaseendurancecapacity.I’minterestedincrosstalkingbetweenautophayandmitochonrialdynamicduringexercise.
