II.Passagetranslation

Likemanyotherwell-knownorganizations,wefacecyberattacksofvaryingdegreesonaregularbasis.Inmid-December,wedetectedahighlysophisticatedandtargetedattackonourcorporateinfrastructureoriginatingthatresultedinthetheftofintellectualpropertyfromGoogle.However,itsoonbecameclearthatwhatatfirstappearedtobesolelyasecurityincident–albeitasignificantone–wassomethingquitedifferent.

First,thisattackwasriotjustonGoogle.Aspartofourinvestigationwehavediscoveredthatatleasttwentyotherlargecompaniesfromawiderangeofbusinesses–includingtheInternet,finance,technology,mediaandchemicalsectors–havebeensimilarlytargeted.Wearecurrentlyintheprocessofnotifyingthosecompanies ，andwearealsoworkingwiththerelevantU.S.authorities.

Second,wehaveevidencetosuggestthataprimarygoaloftheattackerswasaccessingtheGmailaccountsofsocialactivists.Basedonourinvestigationtodatewebelievetheirattackdidnotachievethatobjective.OnlytwoGmailaccountsappeartohavebeenaccessed,andthatactivitywaslimitedtoaccountinformation(suchasthedatetheaccountwascreated)andsubjectline,ratherthanthecontentofemailsthemselves.

Third,aspartofthisinvestigationbutindependentoftheattackonGoogle,wehavediscoveredthattheaccountsofdozensofU.S.andEurope-basedGmailuserswhoareadvocatesofhumanrightsappeartohavebeenroutinelyaccessedbythirdparties.TheseaccountshavenotbeenaccessedthroughanysecuritybreachatGoogle,butmostlikelyviaphishingscamsormalwareplacedontheuserscomputers.
