ThedominanceoffluencyinEnglish-languagetranslationbecomesapparentinasamplingofreviewsfromnewspapersandperiodicals.Onthoserareoccasionswhenreviewersaddressthetranslationatall,theirbriefcommentsusuallyfocusonitsstyle,neglectingsuchotherpossiblequestionsasitsaccuracy,itsintendedaudience,itseconomicvalueinthecurrentbookmarket,itsrelationtoliterarytrendsinEnglish,itsplaceinthetranslator’scareer.Andoverthepastfiftyyearsthecommentsareamazinglyconsistentinpraisingfluentdiscoursewhiledamningdeviationsfromit,evenwhenthemostdiverserangeofforeigntextsisconsidered.
