Untilnow,experimentstotrytodeterminethebiologicalbasisofbeautyhavebeenoftheplease-look-at-these-photographs-and-answer-some-questionsvariety.Someusefulandnotnecessarilyobviousresultshaveemerged,suchasthatonedeterminantofbeautyisfacialsymmetry.

Butwhatwouldreallyhelpisabreedingexperimentwhichallowedtheshapesoffacestobefollowedacrossthegenerationstoseehowthoseshapesrelatetovariationsinthingsthatmightbedesirableinamate.Thesemightincludefertility,fecundity,socialstatus,presenthealth,andlikelyresistancetofutureinfectionandinfestation.Correlationsbetweenmanyofthesephenomenaandattributesofthebody-beautifulhave,indeed,beenestablished.Butinapair-forming,highlysocialspeciessuchasHomosapiens,youalsohavetolivewithyourco-child-raiseror,atleast,collaboratewithhimorher.Sootherthingsmaybeimportantinamate,too,suchasaneventemperandafriendlyoutlook.
