Atthestartof2011,we’restilljustemergingfromaonce-in-a-lifetimerecessionthat’stakenaterribletollonmillionsoffamilies.Weallhavefriendsandneighborstryingtogettheirlivesbackontrack.

Weare,however,ridingafewmonthsofeconomicnewsthatsuggestsourrecoveryisgainingtraction.Andourmostimportanttasknowistokeepthatrecoverygoing.AsPresident,that’smycommitmenttoyou:todoeverythingIcantomakesureoureconomyisgrowing,creatingjobs,andstrengtheningourmiddleclass.That’smyresolutionforthecomingyear.

Still,evenasweworktoboostoureconomyintheshort-term,it’stimetomakesomeseriousdecisionsabouthowtokeepoureconomystrong,growing,andcompetitiveinthelongrun.Wehavetolookaheadnotjusttothisyear,buttothenext10years,andthenext20years.Wherewillnewinnovationscomefrom?Howwillweattractthecompaniesoftomorrowtosetupshopandcreatejobsinourcommunities?Whatwillittaketogetthosejobs?Whatwillittaketoout-competeothercountriesaroundtheworld?WhatwillittaketoseetheAmericanDreamcometrueforourchildrenandgrandchildren?

Ourparentsandgrandparentsaskedthemselvesthosequestions.Andbecausetheyhadthecouragetoanswerthem,we’vehadthegoodfortunetogrowupinthegreatestnationonEarth.

Nowit’sourturntothinkaboutthefuture.Inafewdays,anewCongresswillform,withonehousecontrolledbyDemocrats,andonehousecontrolledbyRepublicans–whonowhaveasharedresponsibilitytomovethiscountryforward.Andhere’swhatIwantyoutoknow:I’mwillingtoworkwithanyoneofeitherpartywho’sgotagoodideaandthecommitmenttoseeitthrough.Andweshouldallexpectyoutoholdusaccountableforourprogressorourfailuretodeliver.

AsI’vesaidsinceIfirstranforthisoffice,solvingourchallengeswon’tbequickoreasy.Wehavecomethroughadifficultdecade;oneofnewthreatsandnewtrialswedidn’texpectwhenitbegan.Butanewyearandanewdecadestretchoutbeforeus.AndifwejustrememberwhatAmericaiscapableof,andliveuptothatlegacy,thenI’mconfidentthatwearepoisedforaperiodofprogress–oneinwhichoureconomyisgrowing,ourstandingintheworldisrising,andwedowhatittakestomakesureAmericaremainsinthe21stcenturywhatitwasinthe20th:thegreatestcountryintheworld.
