Goodmorning.Howareyou?It'sbeengreat,hasn'tit?I'vebeenblownawaybythewholething.Infact,I'mleaving.(Laughter)Therehavebeenthreethemes,haven'tthere,runningthroughtheconference,whicharerelevanttowhatIwanttotalkabout.Oneistheextraordinaryevidenceofhumancreativityinallofthepresentationsthatwe'vehadandinallofthepeoplehere.Justthevarietyofitandtherangeofit.Thesecondisthatit'sputusinaplacewherewehavenoideawhat'sgoingtohappen,intermsofthefuture.Noideahowthismayplayout.

Ihaveaninterestineducation--actually,whatIfindiseverybodyhasaninterestineducation.Don'tyou?Ifindthisveryinteresting.Ifyou'reatadinnerparty,andyousayyouworkineducation--actually,you'renotoftenatdinnerparties,frankly,ifyouworkineducation.(Laughter)You'renotasked.Andyou'reneveraskedback,curiously.That'sstrangetome.Butifyouare,andyousaytosomebody,youknow,theysay,"Whatdoyoudo?"andyousayyouworkineducation,youcanseethebloodrunfromtheirface.They'relike,"OhmyGod,"youknow,"Whyme?Myonenightoutallweek."(Laughter)Butifyouaskabouttheireducation,theypinyoutothewall.Becauseit'soneofthosethingsthatgoesdeepwithpeople,amIright?Likereligion,andMONEYandotherthings.Ihaveabiginterestineducation,andIthinkwealldo.Wehaveahugevestedinterestinit,partlybecauseit'seducationthat'smeanttotakeusintothisfuturethatwecan'tgrasp.Ifyouthinkofit,childrenstartingschoolthisyearwillberetiringin2065.Nobodyhasaclue--despitealltheexpertisethat'sbeenonparadeforthepastfourdays--whattheworldwilllooklikeinfiveyears'time.Andyetwe'remeanttobeeducatingthemforit.Sotheunpredictability,Ithink,isextraordinary.

Andthethirdpartofthisisthatwe'veallagreed,nonetheless,onthereallyextraordinarycapacitiesthatchildrenhave--theircapacitiesforinnovation.Imean,Sirenalastnightwasamarvel,wasn'tshe?Justseeingwhatshecoulddo.Andshe'sexceptional,butIthinkshe'snot,sotospeak,exceptionalinthewholeofchildhood.Whatyouhavethereisapersonofextraordinarydedicationwhofoundatalent.Andmycontentionis,allkidshavetremendoustalents.Andwesquanderthem,prettyruthlessly.SoIwanttotalkabouteducationandIwanttotalkaboutcreativity.Mycontentionisthatcreativitynowisasimportantineducationasliteracy,andweshouldtreatitwiththesamestatus.(Applause)Thankyou.Thatwasit,bytheway.Thankyouverymuch.(Laughter)So,15minutesleft.Well,Iwasborn...no.(Laughter)

五年前 ,我住在Stratford-on-Avon(注:英国市镇,莎士比亚出生与埋葬之地)。

Inthenext30years,accordingtoUNESCO,morepeopleworldwidewillbegraduatingthrougheducationthansincethebeginningofhistory.Morepeople,andit'sthecombinationofallthethingswe'vetalkedabout--technologyanditstransformationeffectonwork,anddemographyandthehugeexplosioninpopulation.Suddenly,degreesaren'tworthanything.Isn'tthattrue?WhenIwasastudent,ifyouhadadegree,youhadajob.Ifyoudidn'thaveajobit'sbecauseyoudidn'twantone.AndIdidn'twantone,frankly.(Laughter)Butnowkidswithdegreesareoftenheadinghometocarryonplayingvideogames,becauseyouneedanMAwherethepreviousjobrequiredaBA,andnowyouneedaPhDfortheother.It'saprocessofacademicinflation.Anditindicatesthewholestructureofeducationisshiftingbeneathourfeet.Weneedtoradicallyrethinkourviewofintelligence.

Weknowthreethingsaboutintelligence.One,it'sdiverse.Wethinkabouttheworldinallthewaysthatweexperienceit.Wethinkvisually,wethinkinsound,wethinkkinesthetically.Wethinkinabstractterms,wethinkinmovement.Secondly,intelligenceisdynamic.Ifyoulookattheinteractionsofahumanbrain,asweheardyesterdayfromanumberofpresentations,intelligenceiswonderfullyinteractive.Thebrainisn'tdividedintocompartments.Infact,creativity--whichIdefineastheprocessofhavingoriginalideasthathavevalue--moreoftenthannotcomesaboutthroughtheinteractionofdifferentdisciplinarywaysofseeingthings.

Thebrainisintentionally--bytheway,there'sashaftofnervesthatjoinsthetwohalvesofthebraincalledthecorpuscallosum.It'sthickerinwomen.FollowingofffromHelenyesterday,Ithinkthisisprobablywhywomenarebetteratmulti-tasking.Becauseyouare,aren'tyou?There'saraftofresearch,butIknowitfrommypersonallife.Ifmywifeiscookingamealathome--whichisnotoften,thankfully.(Laughter)Butyouknow,she'sdoing--no,she'sgoodatsomethings--butifshe'scooking,youknow,she'sdealingwithpeopleonthephone,she'stalkingtothekids,she'spaintingtheceiling,she'sdoingopen-heartsurgeryoverhere.IfI'mcooking,thedoorisshut,thekidsareout,thephone'sonthehook,ifshecomesinIgetannoyed.Isay,"Terry,please,I'mtryingtofryanegginhere.Givemeabreak."(Laughter)Actually,youknowthatoldphilosophicalthing,ifatreefallsinaforestandnobodyhearsit,didithappen?Rememberthatoldchestnut?Isawagreatt-shirtreallyrecentlywhichsaid,"Ifamanspeakshismindinaforest,andnowomanhearshim,ishestillwrong?"(Laughter)

Andthethirdthingaboutintelligenceis,it'sdistinct.I'mdoinganewbookatthemomentcalled"Epiphany,"whichisbasedonaseriesofinterviewswithpeopleabouthowtheydiscoveredtheirtalent.I'mfascinatedbyhowpeoplegottobethere.It'sreallypromptedbyaconversationIhadwithawonderfulwomanwhomaybemostpeoplehaveneverheardof;she'scalledGillianLynne--haveyouheardofher?Somehave.She'sachoreographerandeverybodyknowsherwork.Shedid"Cats"and"PhantomoftheOpera."She'swonderful.IusedtobeontheboardoftheRoyalBalletinEngland,asyoucansee.Anyway,GillianandIhadlunchonedayandIsaid,"Gillian,how'dyougettobeadancer?"Andshesaiditwasinteresting;whenshewasatschool,shewasreallyhopeless.Andtheschool,inthe'30s,wrotetoherparentsandsaid,"WethinkGillianhasalearningdisorder."Shecouldn'tconcentrate;shewasfidgeting.Ithinknowthey'dsayshehadADHD.Wouldn'tyou?Butthiswasthe1930s,andADHDhadn'tbeeninventedatthispoint.Itwasn'tanavailablecondition.(Laughter)Peopleweren'tawaretheycouldhavethat.

Anyway,shewenttoseethisspecialist.So,thisoak-paneledroom,andshewastherewithhermother,andshewasledandsatonthischairattheend,andshesatonherhandsfor20minuteswhilethismantalkedtohermotheraboutalltheproblemsGillianwashavingatschool.Andattheendofit--becauseshewasdisturbingpeople;herHOMEWORKwasalwayslate;andsoon,littlekidofeight--intheend,thedoctorwentandsatnexttoGillianandsaid,"Gillian,I'velistenedtoallthesethingsthatyourmother'stoldme,andIneedtospeaktoherprivately."Hesaid,"Waithere.We'llbeback;wewon'tbeverylong,"andtheywentandlefther.Butastheywentouttheroom,heturnedontheradiothatwassittingonhisdesk.Andwhentheygotouttheroom,hesaidtohermother,"Juststandandwatchher."Andtheminutetheylefttheroom,shesaid,shewasonherfeet,movingtothemusic.Andtheywatchedforafewminutesandheturnedtohermotherandsaid,"Mrs.Lynne,Gillianisn'tsick;she'sadancer.Takehertoadanceschool."

Isaid,"Whathappened?"Shesaid,"Shedid.Ican'ttellyouhowwonderfulitwas.Wewalkedinthisroomanditwasfullofpeoplelikeme.Peoplewhocouldn'tsitstill.Peoplewhohadtomovetothink."Whohadtomovetothink.Theydidballet;theydidtap;theydidjazz;theydidmodern;theydidcontemporary.ShewaseventuallyauditionedfortheRoyalBalletSchool;shebecameasoloist;shehadawonderfulcareerattheRoyalBallet.SheeventuallygraduatedfromtheRoyalBalletSchoolandfoundedherowncompany--theGillianLynneDanceCompany--metAndrewLloydWeber.She'sbeenresponsibleforsomeofthemostsuccessfulmusicaltheaterproductionsinhistory;she'sgivenpleasuretomillions;andshe'samulti-millionaire.Somebodyelsemighthaveputheronmedicationandtoldhertocalmdown.

现在 ,我想说的是--(掌声)ALGore(注:美国前副总统)曾在这里做过一次演讲内容是关于生态学以及RachelCarson(注:美国海洋生物学家)引发的那次环境保护运动 。
