2 ，Thespreadoftheviruscanbecontrolledthroughbasicsanitarypractices,includingwashinghands,wearingfacemasks,anddisinfectingpotentiallycontaminatesurfaces.However,themosteffectivemethodofpreventionforhigh-riskpersons,includingyoungchildren,womenwhoarepregnant,andindividualswithcompromisedimmunesystems,isvaccination.WhentheH1N1VIRUSemerge,therewerenovaccinesavailablethatcouldprovideimmunityagainstinfection.However,theseverityoftheoutbreakpromptedtherapiddevelopmentofanovelvaccine,whichwastestedinclinicaltrialsbeginninginearlyAugust2009.Becausethefirstvaccinetestedrequiretwodoses,therewasimmediateconcernthatnotenoughvaccinecouldbemanufacturebeforeapotentialsecondwaveofillnessarrivedinthefallintheNorthernHemisphere.

BySeptember,pilottestsofnovelsingle-dosevaccinesindicatedthatsufficientprotectioncouldbeprovidedbyoneinjection.Sinovac,aChinesecompany,receivedapprovalfromthegovernmentinearlySeptembertobeginmassprouctionofthevaccine,withthegoalofgeneratingenoughoftheagenttovaccinate5percentoftheChinesepopulationby2010.
